The goals of the MRLC are:
[1] To promote public consciousness of legal rights and responsibilities and to encourage respect at all levels of society for the rule of law
[2] To foster prosperity and economic growth within the Region and attract investment into the Region; and
[3] To assist and contribute to the process of legal development within the countries of the Region.

To achieve these goals or objectives, the Center does and will specifically attempt to:
[1] design and implement programs to increase awareness of fundamental issues of law including those relating to investment, international trade, human rights, administration of justice and socio-economic development
[2] provide the means for improving and promoting the legal and economic knowledge and skills of government officials, private and public lawyers, law instructors, judges, arbitrators and other relevant persons in the Mekong Region generally through training, internship, exchange programs and other activities;
[3] facilitate and support legal research on issues relevant to law development in the Region;
[4] act as a medium for the exchange of legal knowledge and the sharing of relevant experience within the Region, and between persons in the Region and sources outside the Region;
[5] complement existing technical assistance and training programs in cost-effective ways; and
[6] promote close cooperation among persons who are interested in or affected by the development of law within the Region.

 

Program Fields
MRLC programs are conducted in four legal fields:
[1] Business and International Trade Law
[2] Environmental and Resource Management Law
[3] International Law [Public and Private]
[4] Human Rights and Administration of Justice

b) conferences/workshops,
c) internship
d) legal databases (through publications & web-site) (MRLC's homepage is http://www.mekonglawcenter.org) [The MRLC hopes to obtain, and upload on its homepage, additional information on laws in ASEAN counties (esp. those in the Mekong region.)]
e) research [Tentative dates for starting the activities: Year 2002. The MRLC plans to co-conduct a research on the management of natural resources with the Yunan Institute of Science of Science (YISS) the of the Province of Yunan. This will probably take place after the conclusion of the MOU between the MRLC and the YISS in 2002.]
